SOKENDAI KEK Tsukuba/J-PARC Summer Student Program 2026 | Fully-Funded

The SOKENDAI KEK Tsukuba/J-PARC Summer Student Program is a fully funded research internship in Japan hosted by the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) and supported by the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI). Participants will engage in hands-on research within active experimental, theoretical, or technical research groups at either the KEK Tsukuba Campus or the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Tokai. This includes work in particle physics, accelerator science, materials and life science, detection systems, and computational theory under professional supervision.


Eligibility

  • Academic Level: Students in the latter half of undergraduate studies or the early part of a Master’s program (not PhD), as of March 1, 2026.
  • Field Background: Knowledge in dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics is desirable but not strictly mandatory; eligibility may depend on research group fit.
  • Open to: Both international and Japanese students.


Benefits

For participants from non-Japanese universities:

  • Fully covered international airfare arranged and paid by the program.
  • Accommodation in KEK/J-PARC dormitories.
  • Daily stipend: Approx. 1,500 JPY per day.
  • Domestic travel costs (airport ↔ KEK/J-PARC, per KEK rules).
  • Travel costs reimbursed in JPY within the first two weeks of arrival.

For participants from Japanese universities:

  • Free accommodation.
  • Daily stipend.
  • Domestic travel cost reimbursement.

Note: Visa costs and medical insurance are not covered.


Deadline

February 27, 2026 (Friday), 9:00 AM Japan Time. All application materials (including recommendation letters) must be submitted by this deadline.

  • Official academic transcript (if not in English or Japanese, include a brief English translation)
  • Completed application form
  • Recommendation letter (submitted by your recommender using the provided applicant ID)

3. Recommendation Letter: Must be submitted separately by the recommender with your applicant ID included in the filenames.

Selection Results: Applicants will be informed by April 17, 2026
